Multi-faith chaplains launch at HMP Altcourse - join us!
Church and faith group leaders are invited to join us for a special multi-faith event at HMP Altcourse, designed to help faith groups understand their role in supporting individuals leaving prison and their families.
This event, from 11am – 3pm on May 21st, will be a time for reflection, connection, and exploration of how we can build stronger networks of support for those embarking on this new chapter in their lives.
Facilitated by Brian Greenhalgh, Lead Chaplain at HMP Altcourse, the day will see the official launch of the Merseyside Community Chaplaincy project, and highlight the important role faith communities can play in supporting prison leavers and their families.
Together Liverpool's Social Action Development Lead Officer, Joseph Cottrell, will lead an afternoon session speaking about how the Network of Kindness can support faith communities in their work with prison leavers.
Attendees will also have the chance to hear from the Muslim Chaplaincy Association, The Welcome Directory, and Bishop of Prisons Richard Moth.
The event will provide opportunities to network and learn about the various departments within the prison system, their roles, and how they support prisoners through resettlement.
You can read our Q&A with Brian Greenhalgh, originally published prior to a previous Network of Kindness workshop in 2024, with insights into how faith communities can support prison leavers. Brian says: “Through their faith, they can offer hope, stability, and practical help. Finding a church or place of worship that welcomes them can give prison leavers a sense of belonging.
"This support is a way to exercise and demonstrate faith by walking alongside them on their journey. Even for those without a faith, faith communities can offer a unique experience of care and inclusion, providing a sense of being part of something greater."
